You Don’t Say

While browsing the newspaper this morning this headline caught my eye: Abstinence programs hit but the byline was more telling Report: Programs urging teens to say no to sex aren’t working.

You can read the article here but the gist of it as written is: “Programs that focus exclusively on abstinence have not been shown to affect teenager sexual behavior, although they are eligible for tens of millions of dollars in federal grants, according to a study released by a nonpartisan group that seeks to reduce teen pregnancy.”

“A spending bill before Congress for the Department of Health and Human Services would provide $141 million in assistance for community-based, abstinence-only sex education programs.”

Well.  There go my tax dollars to good use.

  1. That and mandatory moment of silence in Illinois schools. I wish we could choose what programs and legislation our tax dollars supported.

    What a waste.

(And yes, I’m a good Catholic girl who believes in abstinence for teenagers along WITH education on contraception and the reasons for it.)

  2. I think our governing people and many people that vote are overly concerned with the trival personal shit that education may or may not provide. What about books and equal education for all children in America? We live in the city and the comparison to the county schools is like night and day for the most part. MOst county schools are good where as most city schools suck.

I would like to know how a moment of silence OR abstinence education helps children read or write. If you can’t read or write I think the logical thing to do since you can’t use your brain is to just have sex.

The priorities are just all screwed up. Our country has to start really caring about young minds.

I read this article too and seriously, just ANOTHER reason why I want to leave this country for good.
    xx
