Ah Cole….we did forget to call tonight to wish you the happiest of birthdays even though yesterday I reminded myself to call while talking to your mom.  This is what happens when we get old as you will see some day far from now.

It seems it took forever for you to get here – which it almost did.  56 hours or so of labor for your poor mother but darn it if you weren’t worth every last minute.  You had the best hair sticky-uppy when you were younger that reminded us of Grandpa Mac.  You are growing into a little man before our eyes – and you are so loving, gentle and kind to Sophie and Henry.  Six years down and a lifetime to go.  We hope you had a very happy day today and we can’t wait to see you soon.

Even though this is quite old, it is one of my favorite pictures of you…you were soooo excited to try on Kate’s hat and mittens this particular Christmas. Those eyes and those cheeks are just too much to resist!

I’m Late..I’m Late..for a very important date

Today is March 31 not March 29 the day this should have been posted.  But I’m going to blame it on a very busy weekend that started with us missing a birthday party because Sophie was running a fever, then me being away all Saturday morning then just plain old forgetting.  BUT I did wish you happy birthday in person on Saturday so that has to count for something.  Plus I had to find a good picture and didn’t you know it, all the ones I wanted to use I had already posted.  So here we go … better late than never….

I wish I had a picture of you right after you came home from the hospital.  I think you know the ones where you are laying on the kitchen counter and we are hovering over you amazed at how tiny you were.  And you could already curl your tongue.  We had those years when you were a pest and wanted to play and I was too cool or mean or just playing the big sister role as I had learned it from Sara.

I’m fortunate to have two sisters that I consider my friends.  My best friends and closest allies in this crazy thing called life.  You allowed me to live vicariously through you during your college years and for that alone I could never thank you enough.  I’ve always been jealous of your butt…oh wait, we’ve been through that one so many times.  I’ve always admired your inner and outer strength and grace and often wondered how you do all you do without being nearly as crabby as I seem to be without half of what you have on your plate.

You are a fun, funny, giving woman, mother, sister and friend and I am blessed to have you in my life.  So feast your eyes on this my dear…..

Here we are in all our glory….bowl haircut, missing tooth, Shawn Cassidy tee shirt and disco fever forever.  Happy belated birthday…

Today is not only the first day of Spring, it is the day you were born.  I wish I could remember more about us growing up but honestly, those memories have been replaced with adult memories which are just as fun and amazing.  I always wanted to be like you (except in the days of really bad “mom” hair – which I decided NOT to post on here today and took a softer, more conservative approach to my annual birthday picture.  Although I will just ask you to take a moment and observe the earrings you sported on your wedding day).

You’ve always been my friend and my surrogate mother when I was too scared or ashamed to turn to Mom.  You’re always there to share advice, or assvice, depending on the circumstances.  I’d trust you with my life and more importantly my children.  You are one of my best friends and deepest confidants.

Happy Birthday!!

I have such vivid memories of your brothers being born – I think because Jack was the first and Brent I knew existed before her mom even told me she was pregnant.  With Kate though I was in the throws of my infertility and somehow her arrival into this world has been lost to the selfish grief I was experiencing at the time.

Today you are 6 and what an amazing 6 you are.  You are the spunkiest girl I know and funnier than all get out.  Not to mention you kicked the adults butts on New Year’s Eve at Wii bowling to which I bow down to you.  You are a goofy, energetic and beautiful girl that loves to mother her younger cousins and we appreciate knowing you’ve always got an eye out for Henry.  Happy Birthday!

Wow…this is really overdue.  A month overdue to be exact(ok so by the time I’m really posting this it is more than a month).  Bad wife….bad, bad wife.   Last month my husband turned 40 and I can’t balk at the age because I am one mere year away from the milestone myself.  So thanks to the best neighbor anyone could ask for, CJ got Ed some truly kick ass tickets to see his favorite baseball team.  Now this is an amazing thing in and of itself considering CJ is a die hard Yankee fan and Ed is a die hard Red Sox fan.   But where they will never see eye-to-eye on the baseball field, they can appreciate the love for the game from a fan standpoint.

So how kick ass were the tickets?  Well let me show you.  Here he is entering the seating area:

Yes, we are entering the seating area directly behind home plate.  And I can tell you that these pictures, as awesome as they are, do no justice to the proximity of the action.  Seriously, these seats are completely amazing.

She also finagled a signed ball because of her great security connections at the park.  Here he is checking out the ball signed by Manny Ramirez:

Now you can see the Red Sox dugout just beyond Ed but let me show you how close we were to the on-deck circle.  Here are David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia warming up:

And one of the best shots of the night, Kevin Youkilis walking to the plate:

I think this was just after he got quite a razzing by some White Sox fans sitting just behind us and to our right.  I’m pretty sure it’s the at-bat where he smacked the shit out of the ball leaving his hecklers to eat their words.

So Happy Birthday Babe….even though I’m over a month late in sharing it with the masses.

What Up, Butt?

I remember a day just over 9 years ago when Ed and I were on vacation.  We were staying in Phoneix but decided to rent a car and drive first Northeast then Northwest to explore the vast expanse that is Arizona.  We had a list of places we wanted to see like the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, Glen Canyon Dam and the Grand Canyon.  Ed was having a lot of problems with his back and traveling at times was difficult because he was in a lot of pain.

There was a portion of our drive in the Painted Desert when I was just looking out the window and a thought crossed my mind.  My sister was pregnant.  I just had the feeling.  When we got home she confirmed her pregnancy.  Some time after we were home and she was well into her pregnancy I had a dream that the baby would be born with dark hair.  Even though my sister was blonde and her first born son was blonde, blonde, blonde I just had a feeling that the baby was gonna be a brown haired baby.  (Which he was for a little while anyway.)

He is partly my soul-mate because we are both middle children and we will share that bond forever.   He is quiet and thoughtful and artistic (seriously, this kid can paint).  Sophie calls him Butt and we love him dearly.  He is even brave enough to invite his old Aunt Amy to view the new Harry Potter movie with him and his friends on Friday…what a guy.  Happy Birthday Mister Butt.
